Somewhere around 11:00PM on the phone talking to my father.
Hello Tatay? Bakal bi Dunkin dala puli tay. I want the butternut si Platon kuno bavarian lang. Tay I want also bunwich, bacon lang tay!
Hulaton ka namon magpuli ha indi kami anay magtulog.
“Hello Tatay? Can you buy us some Dunkin and bring it home? I want the butternut and Platon wants the bavarian. Tay I also want a bacon bunwich! We’ll wait for you to get home, we’ll not sleep yet.”
Those were the days. I remember back then during election period when late night calls to my father would happen just because we want him to bring home some donuts. At these times, we are allowed to stay up late because it’s usually the summer break already; we would then watch TV together as a family and just bond until sleep embraces us. These are unforgettable moments I’ve had as a kid and as much as I would want to sound like a storyteller rather than an endorser here; I just can’t coz I’m honestly pushing for LOVE, THE SECOND TIME AROUND here to the brand of donuts I grew up lovin’!
The one and only pasalubong ng bayan! Dunkin’ Donuts. If you’re thinking now that this is a YUCK, then time has probably eaten you alive already. I must admit that these past few years I have lost my love as well for the product when new stores came out of nowhere and dominated the Philippine market. You have Krispy Kreme for the feeling State-side individuals and now, J.Co for the nakikiuso and nakikipila-para-mukhang-sosyal-paJco-Jco-na-lang group. These two overpowered Dunkin and made it a left out in the race; which is a bit understandable because Dunkin is partly to blame for it. They failed to deliver what is demanded of them by the society and the current times. They became too lax and dull on their attack over the competition. They disappeared from the picture. The once loved and admired donuts completely vanished in the picture. Until…
Just recently, I gave it another try; another chance to fall in love again with the Donut that became part of my childhood and I started reminiscing again, but there are a lot of changes already that happened. The store underwent a very significant transformation from having one lousy 90’s feel to a now modern and stylish tambayan!
It surely is picking up the competition now! Dunkin is already a part of us Pinoys and not matter how most of us tries to belittle it; it’s already a part of our society and of our past. Masarap at mura ang donuts nila! Maarte lang ang ayaw ng lasa nito. And by the way, even their products now are strategically placed in a bar type display. Remember before it was at the back of the cashier and you just point to whatever good looking donut you want if you do not know the name? Now it’s like this:
MUNCHKINS! Sounds familiar? I bet it does! 🙂 And finally to share with you some of my favorites since time memoriam, I took the effort of actually taking a picture of it as it was displayed in their racks.
-and of course-
The bavarian filled which became everyone’s favorite! It’s funny actually when I visited the store again, in my kind thw donuts cost 12.00 still just like the old days, but to my surprise it’s already priced at 20.00 a piece. Imagine how long I’ve not been eating these treats? I just miss them!
I know it’s kinda ironic to say this, but I do love J. Co too, but because of the long lines and the hassle of getting a piece or two, I’d rather have a blast from my past instead with the ever delicious Dunkin treats! I am not just happy writing about this coz it brings back personal memories from my childhood, but I am smiling as well because I am reliving tradition. I am letting you know now what we had before during our yonder years when we were completely oblivious about Krispy Kreme and J.Co wasn’t in existence yet. It’s always nice to go back to the old times. It just makes you feel grounded.
Tunay ngang nag-iisa ang pasalubong ng bayan! I encourage people to make tangkilik it more! 🙂
